Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people aged 65 and older. It also covers certain individuals with disabilities and those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Medicare consists of four parts:
- Part A: Hospital insurance that covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, and some home health services.
- Part B: Medical insurance that covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical supplies.
- Part C: Medicare Advantage plans offered by private insurance companies that provide Part A, Part B, and often additional benefits like prescription drug coverage.
- Part D: Prescription drug coverage available through private insurance companies to help with the cost of prescription medications.
Most people are automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B when they turn 65 if they are already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits. If not, individuals can sign up during their Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which is a seven-month period surrounding their 65th birthday.
Yes, individuals can choose to have additional coverage alongside Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap, are two options that provide additional benefits and help cover costs not included in Original Medicare.
Original Medicare refers to Medicare Part A and Part B, which are provided directly by the government. Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) are offered by private insurance companies and often include additional benefits beyond what Original Medicare covers.
The cost of Medicare varies depending on the specific parts and coverage options chosen. Part A is generally premium-free for most people, while Part B has a standard premium. Income-based adjustments, known as Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amounts (IRMAA), may apply to Part B and Part D premiums for individuals with higher incomes.
